{"id":383,"date":"2021-11-17T04:28:05","date_gmt":"2021-11-17T04:28:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mikefisher.co\/blog\/?p=383"},"modified":"2021-11-17T04:28:07","modified_gmt":"2021-11-17T04:28:07","slug":"one-second","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikefisher.co\/blog\/one-second\/","title":{"rendered":"ONE SECOND"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/mikefisher.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Stopwatch-Header.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikefisher.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Stopwatch-Header.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/mikefisher.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Stopwatch-Header-300x114.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mikefisher.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Stopwatch-Header-768x292.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll never forget the conversation \u2013 a conversation where one second said everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A client with whom I had done a lot of business had hired a new VP.&nbsp; As typically happens in such scenarios, the new VP \u2013 under pressure to perform \u2013 seemed to be on a mission to replace existing vendors with as many of their own vendors as possible.&nbsp; I had a suspicion there was a red laser dot on my forehead indicating I had been earmarked for elimination but couldn\u2019t prove it.&nbsp; It was just a hunch.&nbsp; To decide how to most effectively move forward with my client, I needed to confirm whether my impression was accurate.&nbsp; My dilemma:&nbsp; how to prove or disprove it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I managed to schedule a call with my long-time point-of-contact in the organisation who happened to report to the new VP.&nbsp; Despite having a great relationship, there was no way I could ask him point-blank, \u201cIs there a target on my back?\u201d&nbsp; In preparation for our call, I took time to draft a question I thought might provide me with an opportunity to uncover the truth.&nbsp; But, the question was not actually the question.&nbsp; <strong>How<\/strong> they responded to the question was going to be much more telling than <strong>what<\/strong> they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day arrived and, as usual, my point-of-contact and I spent a good deal of time catching up, both personally and professionally.&nbsp; Eventually, the conversation reached a point where I could put forward the question I had drafted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I presented my question, and incredibly, there was a one-second pause before he answered.&nbsp; The pause was telling.&nbsp; It told me that he couldn\u2019t say the first thing that came to mind and was trying to quickly come up with a way to honour our relationship by answering honestly without throwing his new boss under the bus.&nbsp; As he began to narrate his response, I was barely paying attention.&nbsp; I was too busy writing in capital letters,&nbsp;\u201cONE SECOND PAUSE.&nbsp; TARGET CONFIRMED!\u201d<br><br>Without going into all of the detail, this critical moment ultimately led to subsequent conversations that resulted in preserving this client relationship and avoiding the impending execution.&nbsp; But it all began with that one second.<br><br>If there\u2019s one key I\u2019d like to share from this story, it is this:<br><br>Many times the conversation is not the conversation.&nbsp; Often, the <strong>most critical value <\/strong>in a conversation is not the words but the nuance being communicated between the lines.&nbsp; If we can tune ourselves in to hear <strong>both<\/strong> the words and this nuance, we will \u201chear\u201d much more in the conversation.&nbsp; Small things like pauses (e.g., my story), changes in volume or rate of speech, tone, and micro-communication through body language often say at least as much as the words themselves.&nbsp; Both the words and the nuance are important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>As you think of one of your upcoming critical conversations, how might you prepare yourself to listen beyond the words to hear what else the other party might be \u201csaying?\u201d<br><br>Can you hear beyond the words and hear something deeper?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A story of how hearing one second in a conversation helped preserve a key client relationship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":385,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27,12,14],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-383","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-communication","category-listening","category-relationships"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v18.4.1 -
